Vanderhorst Mansion
Kiawah Island, South Carolina
Master Plan
A thriving plantation in the 1700’s, the Vanderhorst Mansion fell desolate for most of the twentieth century. In the early 1990’s the restoration of the Vanderhorst Mansion was the catalyst for the rebirth of Kiawah Island.
In collaboration with Chris Schmitt, Architect and Glenn Keys, Preservation Specialist, DesignWorks produced a master plan, creating an accommodating place, connecting the needs of a modern family while respecting the historic setting and natural environment of the isolated plantation.
A major objective in the design was to reorient the home toward th marsh using the original composition of the plantation. By creating a simple and elegant open space accentuating a pool as the central focal point, a balance between the natural landscape and historic elements was established.
