Sundial
Barnwell, South Carolina

Award Winning Urban Design

Built in 1858, the sundial in Barnwell, South Carolina is the only remaining vertical freestanding sundial in the country. Surrounded by a parking lot in the 1960's, the Town of Barnwell hired DesignWorks to prepare a plan that returns the area around the sundial into a park for residents and visitors. The master plan consists of removing the parking lot, building a park, and making the sundial a focal point of the park, while connecting to other parts of town and numerous places for sitting.

Sculptures were added and are an integral part of the sundial. Parking was accommodated by turning the adjacent street into a one-way street with angled parking.
