Porter-Gaud School
Charleston, South Carolina
Master Plan
In 1995 DesignWorks was commissioned to establish the new campus master plan for Porter Gaud School. The master plan is phased over time and designed so that the project always looks finished at the completion of each phase. Major elements in order of phasing are 1) Sports fields, 2) Administration and Science Buildings, 3) Gym, and 4) the Lower School.
A new campus road allows for the integration of new facilities into the context of the existing campus life and solves the transportation problems by creating separate drop off points. The new campus road also allows for new building placement to establish a sense of entry to the campus and an improved architectural image that reflects a modern private academy. The master plan integrates the design of new sports fields, (soccer, football, baseball and track), with existing wetlands and natural landscape. An existing wetland is partially retained and reconfigured as an outdoor classroom.
