Memminger Auditorium
Charleston, South Carolina
Site design, construction plans and construction observation
Built in 1939 by Albert Simons, this historic building sat in disrepair for years before receiving a 6 million dollar renovation. Spoleto Festival USA selected DesignWorks in collaboration with Huff + Gooden Architects to design an outdoor lobby garden which mediates between the street and a new addition. Organic landscape forms create a metaphor of our local marsh ecologies while the combination of surface treatments and native plants interweave throughout the site providing texture and interest. The result is a culturally rich and timeless space that celebrates our past and present.
