Plantation Residence
Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
Newly constructed on a historic family plantation in Mt. Pleasant, SC, this residence was sited to take advantage of an existing avenue of Live Oaks, and of marshland views from the edge of the property.
Flood zone regulations dictated that the finished floor should be significantly above the natural grade, making it a challenging project to integrate into the existing farm landscape. The solution was to build two retaining wall ‘wings’ on either side of the house, which allowed the front to overlook an entry court at original grade, while at the rear gentle grassed terraces were created up to the level of the main floor of the house.
The oval entry court was centered round a cluster of existing oaks. New oaks were transplanted from elsewhere on the site to encircle the court. At each side of the house brick paths lead through richly planted garden areas to the terrace steps. The wide, grassy upper level terrace is framed at its corners with perennial borders and low brick walls.
